February is Heart Month.  Did you know that heart disease is still the number one killer of men and women?  Many women still believe that heart attacks are primarily something that happens to men.   The American Heart Association is trying very hard to dispel that false assumption with their Go Red for Women Campaign. Although there is no assurance that a heart attack, or heart disease can be prevented, there are actions we can take to decrease our risk.

Risk factors for heart disease include:

1.      a family history of heart disease – at an early age

2.      age and gender – risk increases for men at age 45 and women at age 55

3.      inactivity or sedentary lifestyle

4.      Unhealthy diet

5.      tobacco use

6.      obesity or being overweight

Most of the risk factors listed above are modifiable. Would you like to decrease your risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and many types of cancer? Start by making one small change at a time.  Once that change has become a habit you can move on to another small change.  Be sure to write down your goals and plan.  Some suggestions are:  walk or exercise for a minimum of 15 minutes 3 times a week to start with, or eat 5 servings of vegetables and/or fruits every day.

Remember, one good habit often brings on another.  Let us know if we can help you reach your goals.
